Reflections on solitude and invisibility
Visual diary from Tachikawa Tokyo in 2015.

As a foreigner living in another culture, it is easy to feel excluded. During my exchange at Musashino Art University in Tokyo I had plenty of time to reflect on the exaggerated personal space and distance I experienced.

Even speaking Japanese and after various times living and traveling in Japan, I was just another foreigner. We were separated from the other students even physically, in a shared dormitory the foreigners were only allowed to stay on the first floor -so we wouldn’t scare the other Japanese students on the higher floors.

Through being so very different from the others, I had practically turned invisible to them.
